Cheese and Rice

yesterday was just one of those days.

I've been trying to get ready for this Julius Caesar audition all week and when I have to work all day before a reading or audition I really try to keep things calm so A. I don't get sweaty B. I don't get stressed C. Everything happens in a timely manner.

None of this happened yesterday.

Work was fun at times but a gigantic mess. I don't usually talk about other aspects about life not regarding acting, or at least I try not to on here, but this is just really pertinent to the kind of day that I had so it needs to be included. I had to take the girls out of their house for a few reasons and since it was too hot for the park or any outdoor activities I decided to bring them to my house. We played with Mae, who miraculously was very well behaved, we made cupcakes, blew bubbles, and played games. Translation: I knocked over the entire bubble container, thus ending the bubble game, and on the way back I managed to drop cupcakes in the car (that doesn't belong to me). Don't worry, thanks to the five second rule and the surreptitious use of my fingers to scoop frosting back on the cupcakes, they made it home. I also lost my balance and kind of maybe sort of dropped the baby and caused her to hit her head on the leg of a table. I also spilled water on me twice throughout the course of the day. Thank goodness I was home and could change into a relatively nice dress before the reading. Of course getting the two girls home with cupcakes was a nightmare and it made me late to getting on the fwy to get to the audition. and of course fate made traffic pretty much worse than it has ever been in my life. Arrived to audition twenty minutes late. The lovely crew at Declan Adams Theatre Co. was kind enough to wait for me to start the reading.

It was not a traditional audition so much as a table read through of the play so there were about 17 actors there reading the various parts for the director. I have been waiting for months to get a chance to read Portia, as it is a part I have always wanted to play, and I waited very patiently in my chair for 40 minutes before Portia had any lines.

Finally I begin the Portia speech, when about three lines in, the chair I am sitting in COLLAPSES, and I fall through the frame of the chair, mid-line, and am caught with my butt on the floor and my arms and feet around my head. I was trapped in my chair until my neighbors were able to pull me out. They were able to catch me so I didn't fall too hard and the nice girl next to me quickly grabbed my dress so that I did not flash anyone miraculously. But let's just say the humiliation was already there.

I have a couple of awesome scratches on my back but no blood, which may have been cooler.

I was able to continue my reading once I moved onto the safety of a couch and I was able to pull it together and finish the scene and I don't think it was too terrible. The lovely guy who was reading Brutus with me was a very kind scene partner and actually looked at me while I was speaking (rare in table reads) and I think that helped me refocus back into the scene.

Eesh.

So that was how I got to the much anticipated Julius Caesar audition. Thank god for lovely Leigh Dunham who forced me to go out afterwards so I wouldn't dwell on it, and the burrito really did make everything better.

Now onto rehearsal tonight!

  1. I think you handled yourself amazingly well, especially considering the absurdity of the situation. I think most people wouldve stormed off and you just laughed it off and went right back at it full throttle.
