yesterday was just one of those days.
I've been trying to get ready for this Julius Caesar audition all week and when I have to work all day before a reading or audition I really try to keep things calm so A. I don't get sweaty B. I don't get stressed C. Everything happens in a timely manner.
None of this happened yesterday.
Work was fun at times but a gigantic mess. I don't usually talk about other aspects about life not regarding acting, or at least I try not to on here, but this is just really pertinent to the kind of day that I had so it needs to be included. I had to take the girls out of their house for a few reasons and since it was too hot for the park or any outdoor activities I decided to bring them to my house. We played with Mae, who miraculously was very well behaved, we made cupcakes, blew bubbles, and played games. Translation: I knocked over the entire bubble container, thus ending the bubble game, and on the way back I managed to drop cupcakes in the car (that doesn't belong to me). Don't worry, thanks to the five second rule and the surreptitious use of my fingers to scoop frosting back on the cupcakes, they made it home. I also lost my balance and kind of maybe sort of dropped the baby and caused her to hit her head on the leg of a table. I also spilled water on me twice throughout the course of the day. Thank goodness I was home and could change into a relatively nice dress before the reading. Of course getting the two girls home with cupcakes was a nightmare and it made me late to getting on the fwy to get to the audition. and of course fate made traffic pretty much worse than it has ever been in my life. Arrived to audition twenty minutes late. The lovely crew at Declan Adams Theatre Co. was kind enough to wait for me to start the reading.
It was not a traditional audition so much as a table read through of the play so there were about 17 actors there reading the various parts for the director. I have been waiting for months to get a chance to read Portia, as it is a part I have always wanted to play, and I waited very patiently in my chair for 40 minutes before Portia had any lines.
Finally I begin the Portia speech, when about three lines in, the chair I am sitting in COLLAPSES, and I fall through the frame of the chair, mid-line, and am caught with my butt on the floor and my arms and feet around my head. I was trapped in my chair until my neighbors were able to pull me out. They were able to catch me so I didn't fall too hard and the nice girl next to me quickly grabbed my dress so that I did not flash anyone miraculously. But let's just say the humiliation was already there.
I have a couple of awesome scratches on my back but no blood, which may have been cooler.
I was able to continue my reading once I moved onto the safety of a couch and I was able to pull it together and finish the scene and I don't think it was too terrible. The lovely guy who was reading Brutus with me was a very kind scene partner and actually looked at me while I was speaking (rare in table reads) and I think that helped me refocus back into the scene.
Eesh.
So that was how I got to the much anticipated Julius Caesar audition. Thank god for lovely Leigh Dunham who forced me to go out afterwards so I wouldn't dwell on it, and the burrito really did make everything better.
Now onto rehearsal tonight!

Well Shit
Today was weird. I had two auditions one at 11 am and the other aroud 2 45 pm and I had planned to just mill around downtown and run lines for the next audition in between. You'd think that it'd be a relatively easy day but it was exhausting.
On the way to the first audition I got rear-ended on the freeway while sitting in traffic so I had to deal with all of that mess. Poor kid who hit me was so upset. Luckily there is very little damage to my car so I'm not really worried about it. It did make me about 30 minutes late to my audition though, so I had Sheila call and warn the casting directors, but they didn't even seem to notice thank goodness. First was the audition for IHOP commercial. It was fine. Easy. Sat there and reacted to someone getting knocked over. It's amazing how many people they see for a 15 second spot that literally requires turning your head and perhaps smiling. It is so counterproductive.
Then I grabbed a quick bite to eat and went and sat in front of the studios in Culver City and waited for my audition time. Kind of boring but there was a nice breeze and I went over my copy before the audition. Was pretty cool to meet Sharon Lawrence, she is just beautiful and so nice and sweet and she gave me fantastic feedback and I think I have a good/fair shot. I am glad I got the chance to audition because it was fun and I felt really good about it after. Even though I was super nerve wracked beforehand. As always, whatever happens happens. I have let it go.
I'm so drained. It was a rollercoastery day. Butterscotch is very sick. I think this is his last week on earth. I'm very sad about it. Trying to stay positive and celebrate his life.

Live Under a Stage
The following post is approved by Bathtime Maeby:

I didn't realize that on Sunday morning while we were rehearsing for the play at The Next Stage, which is where it is going to be performed, that there were three homeless men sleeping under the stage the entire time. One of the producers, Jeff Hirbour, went under the stage for some unknown reason and saw them all sleeping down there and after discussing it with Jeff Morris, the director, (I know, too many Jeffs in my life) they decided not to tell the cast which was probably a wise decision. They told me last night while at rehearsal and it's one of those horrifying, hilarious ocurrences in life that says so much of one's current state. I mean, I'm guessing shit like that don't happen at the Ahmanson or at the Disney Concert Hall. I love it.
I think I might actually know all my lines! I mean, it's not like I was mocked by a six year old because I still hadn't learned my lines after having my script after a month when she had her script for a week and had learned all her lines for her play "I Look Ridiculous" opening next week at St. Matthew's Elementary School. Le sigh.
Audition tomorrow for a Verizon Commercial. I feel like I have been to this casting director at least three times and each time I go they tell me I am too white to play a hispanic girl. Let's see if it happens tomorrow. Only good sign is that this is the third time I have auditioned for Verizon, who really seems to like me, the other two times I have auditioned for them I have gotten callbacks and avails. Fingers crossed. I'm broke as shit.
I think i forgot to mention that on Saturday Checkmate was screened and I think it was well received. It looked really great and I can't wait to get a copy. It was very fun to be able to go to the screening and see people's reactions. Definitely weird to see my 8 foot face. It's really unnatural and probably goes against the natural order of things and will in some way make me slowly start to go insane from the complete unnaturalness of it. Maybe that's why all actors are crazy. We are doing something inherently contrary to nature by being so overly conscious of ourselves and being able to watch ourselves. Barf.

peace.

I recall:
A couple weeks ago I auditioned for a health care company to be a part of their educational theatre children's program, which could a. be fun and b. be steady employment which is always a novel concept.
I was insanely sick during the audition and had to sing a song so I thought for sure I wouldn't get a callback but I did, and I'm so glad because the callback was quite fun.
Since it was for a company that required a good amount of theatre training they had extensive callbacks involving dancing, movement, improv and even attempts at putting sets together. It was like some kind of weird theatre camp. The first half of the day they had us dance and do improv, afterwhich about half of the group was let go. Luckily my friends and I got to stay on for the rest of the day when we read from lots of different scripts.
It was weird because I was expecting some really intimidating callback experience with terrifying improv (because for the most part I abhor improv) but the stuff we did were exercizes reminicent of the first day of movement class in the BFA. I am talking total cake. Thank god the BFA kicked our asses when it did so now I can pretty much handle anything thrown my way.
The whole day was super fun because of the fun games and such and hanging out with my friends, but I didnt get the job. Which I am actually glad I didn't because I watched SICKO last week and remembered that this corporation is the devil and I am too young to sell out to the devil.
I may be broke and stuck but I still have my principles. Or so I tell myself.
On another note, am thoroughly obsessed and in love with Hedi Slimane's artwork, I think there will be an exhibit around here soon, though I may very well be incorrect about that. He just did some pieces on Lindsey Lohan and Courtney Love that were good, albeit irritating individuals.
Obviously, my fave is my bb Louis:
